Alternatives to Environmental Apocalypse: Interrupting Anthropocentrism as the Way Forward Together

In this interactive presentation, Dr. Alexis F. Piper will offer new ways of understanding how we got here: to global ecosystem collapse, mass extinctions, and the anthropocene. Moreover, she’ll offer specific strategies for interrupting and moving beyond anthropocentrism, the myth that humans are the pinnacle of creation and possess the inherent right to exploit the rest of Life on planet Earth. From rhetorically listening to Indigenous eco-orientations; re-orienting ourselves to “deep time” perspectives; using new scientific discoveries to deconstruct the pernicious Nature/culture binary; to exploring the animist, Ecocentric, and kin-centric histories of the audience’s own ancestry and cultural traditions, Dr. Piper will draw from her years of scholarship on environmental rhetoric, nature writing, wilderness philosophy, and Indigenous eco-orientations to offer hope and a way forward together.

Meet offsite at Kellings Lakes to learn the basics of orienteering from a member of the Badger Orienteering Club. Then, venture out to challenge yourself on the orienteering courses set up on the Kellings Lake property. Bring a water bottle, dress for the weather, and wear appropriate footwear that can get wet and muddy. Registered participants will be emailed additional details prior to the program.

Join Maywood’s nature-based book club, in partnership with Mead Public Library, for lively discussion and camaraderie at Mead Public Library. Our October book is Lost City of Z by David Grann. Books are available up to 30 days before the club meets. To get your copy, go to Mead Public Library, tell them that you are a member of Maywood’s book club, and ask to check out the book. All you need is a library card; you can get a library card by showing a form of identification. Discussion questions for the book will be posted to the Maywood website about 30 days before the group meets. Questions can be found under the registration section of the program tab on the website.

iRest is a meditation practice based on the ancient tradition of yoga nidra, adapted for the modern life. It can be practiced by anyone, regardless of physical ability or experience with meditation. When practiced regularly, iRest enables you to meet each moment of your life with peace and well-being. This practice can be done while sitting in a chair or lying on the floor. Bringing a yoga mat, blanket, towel or small pillow, and eye covering could make the experience more enjoyable but is not necessary. The orchard has been family owned and operated since it started in 1951, and it boasts a population of 1,000 apple trees including 22 different varieties. Enjoy a professional photography mini session in Maywood's beautiful nature setting during peak autumn leaf season with photographer Nate Dallesasse. Proceeds benefit the park. Limited timeslots are available October 19, 20, and 22.
Each session lasts 20 minutes. You will need to check in at the Ecology Center 15 minutes before your scheduled time. Sessions can have two to 10 people in them. Sorry, no pets, outfit changes, or engagement photos. You will receive 10-15 high-resolution images on a USB drive along with a photo release. This allows you to use the photos as you'd like.
You will pay a $75 deposit to hold your space. We will then invoice you via email for the balance of your session which will be due within 14 days of booking your session. Payment for the balance of your session can be made with credit card, cash, or check. A processing fee applies to all credit card transactions.
